The Soldier

Wed Dec 6, 2006, 1:43 PM
  • Mood: Noble
from an email -

IT WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I 'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE";

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY HOME."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."

This poem was written by an unnamed Soldier

Even though I'm not actively celebrating :hump: day as I have before, I had to share this with you.

A friend of mine sent this to me.

Check out the videos at ihumpedyourhummer.com.

I only wish I were kidding.

For this :hump: day, I decided to turn my attention outward...and Googled hump.

Some of the websites were shocking, Not Safe for Work, and somewhat surprising.

Our first :hump: was a website called ihumpthings.com. No, this isn't my personal website. There are random humping pictures there, and recommendations of things to :hump:.

Next up was Hump Granny. No, you pervs, it isn't what you think, but I dare you to look anyway.

Venturing into the NSFW waters was Ask Dr. Hump. Sex advice with a :hump:, eh? Why not...

Another website I can take no credit for but I had to include anyway was ihumppillows.com. Although there was no content to speak of, it made me smile...

An older article was included about Georgie-porgie called The Emperor's New Hump. Once again, I rather doubt he'd know what to do with a :hump: even if he had pictures...

There's Urban Dictionary and Wikipedia entries that have nothing to do with each other, but included just for the sake of including them.

All in all, Google has 9,490,000 results for :hump:, but no matter how you look at it, there's nothing better than a Happy :hump: Day greeting! :D

O..and I see we are close to the same age! ( actually I will be 39 this month) Always nice finding DA people in their 30's.

Thanks for the watch! May I encourage you to post some of your knitting? I would love to see it.

We here at :devart: are so lucky, fortunate and blessed.
But there are some who aren't as lucky.

Hello. I'm Onestar, and I'm here today asking for your support.

We spend each Wednesday :hump: each other, but there are those individuals out there who cannot :hump:. These poor souls have never experienced the pleasure and wonder of :hump:...they've never known the satisfaction each :hump: day can provide.

But there's a way you can help.

For the cost of a :hump: a day, you can help sponsor a :hump:-less individual. The Society For Helping :hump: has, over the years, allowed countless :hump-less folks learn how to :hump:, and in doing so, lead more productive and fulfilling lives.

Even now, :hump: councellors are assisting those who've never :hump: in their lives to enjoy the benefits :hump: bring.

Won't you please help? It takes so little, and it means so much.

The Society For Helping :hump: We're :hump:ing the world, one person at a time.

The last few weeks, the :hump: day messages have become rather...grand.
This week, tho, we're just gonna cleanse the palette with something a little more...simple.

Happy :hump: Day!

There. Can't get any more simple than that. ;)
